On 15 September 2026, the Biennale di Venezia launched both a national and an international call for two new, original choreographic creations. These calls are available online on the official Biennale di Venezia website and will remain open for submissions until 20 October 2026. The selected choreographies are scheduled to debut at the 21st International Festival of Contemporary Dance, Biennale Danza 2027, which will take place from 15 to 31 July 2027.
The selection process for these new works will be overseen by Wayne McGregor, who serves as the artistic director of the Dance Sector at the Biennale. Applicants may propose projects to be developed independently or in collaboration with other partners, as the contribution provided can be allocated autonomously or with collaborators for the realisation of the new choreography.
The Biennale Foundation will support the selected projects by covering essential production costs. This includes artistic fees, travel expenses, accommodation, and technical requirements necessary for the presentation of the new choreographies at the festival. Such support aims to facilitate the realisation and staging of the chosen works.
This initiative marks the sixth consecutive year that Biennale Danza has renewed its commitment to supporting new generations of artists and dance companies, both in Italy and internationally. The ongoing support reflects the festival’s dedication to fostering creativity and innovation in the field of contemporary dance.
In previous editions, the festival has presented works such as "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by the British duo Bullyache, "Sisifo felice" by Philippe Kratz and Pablo Girolami with Nuovo Balletto di Toscana, "Just Between Me and Jesus" by New Zealander Oli Mathiesen, and "Invisible" by Andrea Salustri, with the latter two scheduled for 2026.
