Whitney Museum Appoints Meg Onli and Zack Winokur to Lead 2028 Biennial

The Whitney Museum of American Art has named curator Meg Onli and stage director Zack Winokur as co-curators for its 2028 Biennial, scheduled to open in March 2028.

The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced that Meg Onli, a curator at the museum, and Zack Winokur, a choreographer and stage director, will co-curate the 2028 edition of the Whitney Biennial. The exhibition is planned to open in March 2028.

Meg Onli most recently co-curated the museum’s Roy Lichtenstein retrospective, which is scheduled to run until 10 May 2027. Her ongoing curatorial work at the Whitney positions her to help shape the direction of the upcoming Biennial.

Zack Winokur brings experience from the performing arts. He is the co-founder and artistic director of the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*), which last year staged a five-week program at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. Winokur was also previously the artistic director of Little Island, a cultural event space on the Hudson River near the Whitney Museum.

His directing credits include productions at Opera Philadelphia and the Santa Fe Opera, as well as work on the expanded version of The Wizard of Oz currently showing at Sphere in Las Vegas.

The Whitney Biennial is a major contemporary art exhibition that often attracts debate and political discussion. The 2026 edition was notably free of controversy, which contrasted with previous years. The selection of Onli and Winokur reflects the museum’s ongoing interest in diverse and interdisciplinary programming.

The 2028 Biennial is expected to offer audiences a new perspective through the combined expertise of a museum curator and a stage director, potentially blending visual art and performance. This collaboration may influence the exhibition’s format and content, reflecting current trends in contemporary art.

Why it matters

The appointment of Meg Onli and Zack Winokur to lead the Whitney Biennial highlights the museum’s interest in integrating curatorial and performance disciplines. Their combined experience promises an innovative approach to the 2028 exhibition, which is a key event in the contemporary art calendar. For audiences and artists alike, this signals a potentially dynamic and interdisciplinary showcase at the Whitney Museum.
